One Block Barbershop break and enter
Last night, something heavy went through the window of the One Block Barbershop on Gottingen Street (photo below).
For those not in the know, the One Block Barbershop is a tiny salon that just opened in the North End of Halifax. One Michael Phillips, formerly of Fred, has been chopping the locks of trendy people there since November.
"One Block is a haircutting space with a vision to be more accessible and laid back than the average salon, read The Coast's Shoptalk. Phillips was dreaming up "DIY haircutting workshops, gender-bending haircutting sessions, sliding scale payment on certain days for underwaged."
One Block is also active on social media, posting photos of Phillips' cut to their Facebook group. Today, a different sort of photo went up:

Apart from the damage, The Coast reports some stuff was stolen from the brand new local business.
We'll update this post when we hear back from Phillips and the Halifax police about the incident.
Update #1:
Cst. Brian Palmeter says police responded to the call at about 4:30 a.m., and were on the scene a couple minutes later (One Block is "kitty corner" to the Gottingen police station). The incident is being classified as a break and enter, though it doesn't look like the theft extended beyond items that were easy to reach from the window display.
"We don't believe that somebody entered," Palmeter says, and "don't know what the window was smashed with."
Update #2:
Michael Phillips called us early this afternoon from his home, where he had retired with some candy.
He got the call from the building manager some time after 4 a.m., and went into work immediately. He got there before police, he says, and noticed broken glass everywhere and a "big hunk of cement" that had obviously been used to break the window.
At first, it didn't look like anything had been stolen, but then he noticed that an iPad from reception had been taken.
"Seemingly they just noticed the iPad through the window ... They just had to take two steps to get to reception."
Nothing else was really damaged, Phillips said, but the thief also walked away with a big black notebook, strangely. After police left, Phillips stayed.
"I just lay down on the cold cement floor for a couple hours until the glass shop opened."
He says the window has been patched and the glass will be replaced within the week. He also had to call all today's clients and re-book them for another day. Phillips is the only stylist in the shop.
"I decided to close just because I was so tired ... I would probably be doing some wacky haircuts today. It was so jarring."
He says the shop will be open regular hours tomorrow: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
