Heat map shows HRM's biking hot spots

According to a University of British Columbia study, Halifax is one of Canada's 'bikeable' cities. But the research isn't the interesting part of this study: the team's heat maps for the ten cities are. (They've made the data from the maps partially available—I say partially, because it's not open data, like our Open Road data project is. How cool would it have been to combine UBC's bikeability findings with our own data on accidents?).

Mayor won't vote on Occupy case, Fred Connors feels pigeonholed, Waterside gets RBC

Mayor Peter Kelly is busy this weekend. He won’t be making it to the Occupy Nova Scotia- hosted meeting where anyone in attendance helps decide if the protesters sue the city (Vote in our poll!). While this isn’t quite Mayor Rob Ford snubbing Pride territory, it could prove costly. Occupy general assemblies are easier decision-making bodies to sway than the courts. (...

No conflict of interest in developer’s appointment to Purcells Cove committee

*A land developer is back on a city committee he resigned from.

At an in camera meeting of Chebucto Community Council today, developer and area landowner Norman Nahas was reinstated as a member of the committee that is looking at extending water and sewer lines farther down Purcells Cove Road. This crucial committee is known as the Purcells Cove Community Steering Committee.

"All decisions made with regard to selecting members to any committees
are made in-camera; whether by Council or Community Council," says Spryfield-Herring Cove...

Video: seal beached at Black Rock Beach in Point Pleasant Park

A seal was beached at Point Pleasant Park on Sunday, at Black Rock Beach near the eastern side of the park.

Two videos of the animal were taken by John Thibeau, who wrote about the experience on his blog:

"About 30 minutes before we arrived, a passerby had discovered the seal on the beach and alerted security. Security telephoned the proper authorities to (Department of Lands & Forests?) come down and tend to the carcass (they never arrived; I was there for another 10-15 minutes after the seal had disappeared). After that, the crowd began to gather. People standing above...

Canada Day holiday for some, sleep watcher denied bail, Mike Savage's strong lead

The Costco in Bayer’s Lake is making its employees work on Canada Day. One employee says “it’s just corporate greed,” and that “a lot of people are outraged over it,” but will probably just let it happen. Costco used to throw family picnics for their employees on Canada Day, says the same staffer. Isn’t there a law against working Canada Day? Well, when July 1 falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is declared the holiday according to the federal Holidays Act. Apparently other provinces have found ways to keep days-off on...

Occupy wants the people of Halifax to decide whether Occupy sues HRM

Occupy Nova Scotia wants you ... to decide whether they sue our city, or not.

Members of Occupy Nova Scotia just had all charges against them dropped, and have been hemming and hawing about what that means for their legal future. The Crown has decided there is no reasonable expectation of achieving convictions of obstruction of justice against any of the activists—although there's plenty of video evidence of exactly what happened that day.

So if the system can't win in court against the activists, could the activists win in court against the...

Picnicface: saved?

An automated email went out to all the people who signed the "Save Picnicface" online petition, which hit 7,000 signatures on Friday. The email hints that the campaign—masterminded by the plucky local comedy troupe who want their Comedy Network TV show reinstated—has not been in vain:

Hey all,

Thanks so much for all your support. Without giving away too much detail, we can say that your signatures and...

Downtown Dartmouth gets a new brand: "All together"

Downtown Dartmouth has a new look. The executive director of the Downtown Darmouth Business Commission Tim Olive threw an event today at Alderney Landing to unveil the new logo, which comes with a new website, too.

The caché of the page says the "Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission (DDBC) unveiled the new brand today, bringing the people of the Downtown core together to celebrate the area’s continued growth."

On the phone before the noon launch, organizers were cagey, but promised more details later. We'll see what the new brand and web business directory brings to the 'dark side.'

Mayor says no reason for Occupy eviction explanation, paper mill power breaks, Schmidtville heritage

Even though the Crown dropped the charges against members of Occupy, the mayor doesn’t see why there should be a public debriefing of what happened leading up to the Remembrance Day eviction. Up until now, the excuse for keeping the meeting a secret was that members of Occupy still had charges related to the eviction before the courts. As flimsy as that excuse was, even that buttress is gone now. The Mayor is steadfast: the secret meeting will stay secret. He...
